Porn Bots and Masculine Leadership

Over the last 8 years I have received numerous ‘friend’ and ‘follow’ requests from porn bots on the various social media platforms. I either block them or delete their requests. Please. Block them and delete their requests. Don’t look twice and don’t look back.

‘Porn bot’ is too cold a category for these women who are exposing their dignity and their bodies on the internet. I don’t know too much about them, but there are probably both pimps and prostitutes involved in setting up these web pages.

It begs the question. Who are these women? What are their stories? Do they cry themselves to sleep every night? Do they feel stuck? What has been done to them? What have they done?

Dostoevsky once wrote in Notes from the Underground Man: “For a woman, all resurrection, all salvation, from whatever perdition, lies in love; in fact, it is her only way to it.” Nothing helped me understand the crisis in the feminine world more than this. Nothing helped me to understand how women respond to the gospel more than this. But it also helped me to understand that if she goes seeking that love based on the lies the Devil tells her, then she will also die in lovelessness.

Let’s get this truth out of the way so that we can speak to male leadership. Women should take responsibility for the way that they respond to the situations around them. They take responsibility for their own sins. They shouldn’t take responsibility for the sins done to them, but for their response to those sins. The call to repent and believe also goes out to the women in this world.

But we also see that Jesus tends to be tougher on the men than the women.

We are facing a crisis in the modern day church. This crisis is the crisis that men and increasingly more women are devouring porn. I use the word devour because this is a sexual cannibalism. It is a crisis because men are impotent to lead, and women are beat up rather than shown the love of Christ. They are accused rather than listened to.

The way out of this crisis is by taking responsibility and taking responsibility looks a lot like repentance of sin and faith in Christ. What exactly does this mean? Repentance is a complete 180 degree turn away from sin. Faith is running to Christ and not giving up even when our lungs our burning and our bones are aching.

Pornography is not the unforgivable sin, but it is utterly despicable. It makes men impotent to lead and it estranges women from the love of God in Jesus Christ. Yes, men are sinners. But we are not victims of our sin. We are willing participants. We run with the thought pattern. We click accept on the follow or friend request. We go deeper and deeper into the black darkness of the cyber world. We laugh or yell when the women around us get upset.

There are women who get out of this wicked world, from watching pornography, from acting out pornography, from prostituting themselves to the darkness. There are men who get out of this world, quit watching pornography, reject abusing women, and quit being pimps and assholes and wimps.

But the crisis will not even come close to being over until men lead the charge. Some women will quit with or without men, because Christ isn’t dependent on us. But men must lead. Men are called to lead. The crisis will rage until men stop wallowing in their self-pity and self-justification and turn in faith too the perfect work of Jesus Christ. The crisis will not be over until leaders in the church admit that their self-pity and self-justification has lead them to whine and mope about how hard it is for men rather than head up the charge against this sin which has lead to all the fall-out in the contemporary church through movements like #Metoo and the victimhood culture.

Why is it so important for men to lead in this repentance? We reflect the great love our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave Himself up for His bride. This does not mean that we are martyrs, but we are willing and bold servants of Jesus Christ. We win through sacrifice. We will burn our TVs, smash our computers, and if necessary pluck out our eyes for the sake of the women in our churches. We will take the hit for our brides, and for the women in our churches. We will take responsibility for the part that we have played in this crisis through lack of the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility. Only Jesus can save, but we are called to imitate and reflect His great love.

So let’s strap on the armour of God and go to war.
